Black Swan’s Low Expectations
When a friend of mine posted a link to the trailer of Black Swan about a month back, my attention was immediately caught. While I had no idea what the film was about, I was intrigued by the imagery and the use of Swan Lake, a personal childhood favourite ballet of mine. I didn’t understand the plot entirely, but realized that a woman’s quest for perfection and the resulting egotism mixed in with some classic schizophrenia were at the heart of Darren Aronofsky’s film starring Nathalie Portman and Mila Kunis. I know, Mila Kunis. Wtf, right?

Restricted Free Agency: Again with the Veil?
I never thought that my body could serve as potentially the next front of the ever-erroneous but still somehow existent ‘clash of civilizations.’ Yet with the way things seem to be going these days, it seems that the bodies of millions of women around the world are grotesquely the appropriate abodes for deep-seated but nuanced racism, long-standing sexist trajectories, plans for cultural survival and ill-thought out plans for integration.

Your Vocabulary’s a Turn Off, Bro
There are many things about guys that I find to be complete turn offs. If it weren’t for my strongly heterosexual inclination, I’d consider being in a relationship with myself because I really get me. I know what I like and I remember all the important dates. I also know when I’m needed and when I need to distance myself. And I’m also pretty goodlooking. So it’s just win-win all around. Unfortunately, my ‘pheramonal’ persuasion leads me towards the male sex and I’m stuck with their perpetual general idiocy which, at my least hormonal, can be somewhat endearing.

Deconstructing Lady Gaga
It’s a piece on Lady Gaga, her self-representation and essentially the meaning of it all for our generation. Sounds bleh yeah? Well, shut it. Paglia, who I never liked given first year feminist collective brainwashing, comes down brilliantly on what our sexual culture has become or rather is becoming. Lady Gaga is not simply an artist. She’s not just a celebrity. She’s a lot more and that’s what is ultimately terrifying about her. Gaga is literally out of Brave New World – a Lenina who is part and parcel of commodified human sexuality.

First Arab American to be Miss USA. Billionth Woman to be Exploited.
Okay, so, I usually don’t like writing two similarly themed posts simultaneously because it makes it seem as though I’m going through some sort of written thematic phase. In this case, I swear it’s just a coincidence. I’d been thinking

Good job, Beyonce.
Unable to sleep, I decided to catch up on one of my favourite YouTube channels – The Young Turks. The following video shocked me. And the reaction by the two anchors – Cenk and Ana – shocked me equally. Yeah.

Holy Stream of Consciousness, Foucault!
A while back, I had an extremely interesting and thought-provoking conversation with a friend of mine. He was taking a class on Foucault, and brought up his redefining of historical terms, primarily discussing the issue that sex and sexual identity were modern phenomena. It’s the idea that sexual identities, where we define sexual relations between individuals, are a product of modernity as opposed to anything natural. Foucault claims that prior to the 19th and 20th centuries, relations we now deem in a particular fashion were common and had nothing to do with personal identification.

To Shake or not to Shake?
Visibility has come to take hostage of our understanding of sexuality. I would blame the 1960s Sexual Revolution, but I lack the academic credentials to do so. However, this idea of visibility as the sole expression of sexuality can easily be traced to the Sexual Revolution, which saw the breaking down of shame and humility previously associated with sex.
