Let’s Talk about Jihad, Baby–Actually.. Let’s not.
Below is a revised version of a couple of emails I sent in an exchange over the general topic of the responsibility of the American/Canada Muslim communities to address misconstructions/abuse of ‘jihad’. It seemed to me that were some important considerations missing in this conversation (coming in the shadow of the Boston bombings and the obsession over the Tsarnaev brothers’ “religiousity”) as well as some problematic assumptions being made about the nature of crime and violence.

To Vote or Not To Vote? My Head Hurts.
Is it wrong to abstain from voting, even with good reason? Or is no reason ever good enough? Is to abstain to disenfranchise yourself unnecessarily as well as remove yourself from the most basic form of participation in the public?

There’s No American Islam to Reform
There is no one American Islam, but it – whatever it ultimately is being defined as – is in a constant state of formation and growth. It is happening in a multitude of ways, some often conflicting. So can we begin to reform “American Islam”?

Racialized Muslim Bodies And White Revert Privilege
Awhile ago, I was involved in a great but challenging debate with some of my intellectual superiors on the issue of ‘White feminism’. The initial discussions revolved around feminist imperialism (or imperialist feminism). A discussant equated this with ‘White feminism.’

Celebrating the Deaths of Bad Arab Men
This morning I was awoken by a text from a friend which read “Gaddafi.” I stopped for a minute, to think, responded and went back to bed. I didn’t want to deal with the Twitteratti or the Facebook status updates

Repression 2.0
Traditionally, Arab regimes have used a large repertoire of repressive means ranging from massive torture (as it was the case pre-occupation Irak, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, and to a lesser extent Morocco and Jordan), to the complete control of the press, the banning of the opposition, the diffusion of a culture of fear through the extensive presence of the Mukhabarat or secret services, the encouragement of reporting on others…etc. By the late nineties however, technological changes and the evolution of the international context has led to the widening of the space for contentious politics.
